Beriti comes to Novo fromMETAD, a third generation family owned coffee producing company headquartered in Addis Ababa. METAD has a rich history, beginning in Ethiopia post World War II, when the Ethiopian emperor awarded Muluemebet Emiru, the first African female pilot, land for coffee farming in the Guji and Sidama zones. METAD works closely with the local community, setting up education opportunities including university scholarships and sponsorship of a state of the art elementary school with more than 700 students. METAD’s workforce is over 70% women and they work to provide technical assistance to the local population by sharing modern farming equipment. They also provide a certification program for more than 5,000 local farmers who get paid premiums for the cherry and then a second payment once their coffee is sold.
